About Us

Birmingham’s base in London officially opened for business in 2005. The office known as Birmingham W1 signalled a new and important phase in the ongoing transformation of the city and its ambitions to be a national and international player.

The creation of the office was an initiative spearheaded by Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, responding to the wishes of Birmingham’s business community for a greater presence in the nation’s Capital. It was co-financed and is managed by The NEC Group and Marketing Birmingham.

Following increased popularity, Birmingham W1 relocated to Charlotte Street in the media heartland of central London in February 2008. Remaining within the all-important central postcode district, Birmingham W1 now has new brand new meeting facilities and access to a private 30-seater screening room and hospitality bar in the building.

Paul Thandi, Chief Executive of The NEC Group said:

Birmingham W1 is an important enabling facility for us. It allows us to explore business opportunities with both existing and new customers. It also affords us the opportunity to open up new sectors such as live broadcast - including BBC Sports Personality of the Year and Horse of the Year Show - together with the growing digital sector.

The new location takes us closer to The NEC Group's vision of being the 'place where people come to discover the future' by locating us next door to some of the leading international media, digital and design companies. The London office is a great way for us to market the thriving Birmingham brand and give more energy and oxygen to the great place to do business that is Brum.

Councillor Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council comments:

This move is a great opportunity to build on existing relationships and help create new ones, through high quality networking events, briefings and meetings with forward-thinking organisations that want to develop mutually beneficial working partnerships with Birmingham.

Having the Birmingham W1 office in the heart of the capital's creative comunity will help to further enhance our reputation as a vibrant and modern city that is growing in stature daily, both nationally and internationally, in fields that range from local government innovation to business and events management to regeneration.
